Strategy and Analysis to Defend and Transform Public Education

Why I will NOT be going to the Teacher Appreciation party co-sponsored by the Oakland Public Ed Fund.

Classroom Struggle is honored to post a letter written by a Special Ed. teacher urging her fellow teachers to skip the annual “Teacher Appreciation” party sponsored by charterizing and privatizing Philanthro-Capitalists like the Oakland Public Ed. Fund.  Check it out below.

Dear Teacher friends,

I will not be going to the Third Annual Teacher Appreciation party co-sponsored by the Oakland Public Ed Fund and instead will be partying with my teacher friends elsewhere for the following reason:

  • The Oakland Public Ed Fund is a Pro Charter organization Like GO (Great Oakland) Public Schools

  • They receive funding from the Rogers Family Foundation whose goal is to increase the amount of charters in Oakland by 2020 as described on their website.

“Our tactics will be to stay the course of growing small-but-mighty, high-performing charter schools, making big bets on trusted and successful charter management organizations, and building an autonomous, independent Oakland School Design Lab to create the expertise and bandwidth to help new school and school redesign.”

  • Brian Rogers,  the Chief Executive Officer of the Rogers Family Foundation  helped to create Go (Great Oakland) Public Schools Leadership Center, the Oakland Education Fund, the Oakland Charter Collaborative and the Oakland Literacy Coalition, and is on the Board of Directors of the Lighthouse Community Charter Schools and Education for Change Public Schools.

  • Pro Charter organizations like these are anti-union.

I hope you will join me in NOT attending this event, as enticing as it might be. Instead plan your own party with your teacher friends, as we will be doing at my school.  They appreciate you more anyways!
